UK broadband very ancient (and slow)

Then stop advertising 'up to 8Mb' when you yourself concede that virtually no one will get it. Or spend money in upgrading the facilities. Lord knows you guys (BT) tend to be one of the most expensive ISPs providers here, so I am sure you have the dosh to actually do something about it. You know, like rolling out FTTH or actually speeding up the ADSL2+ and 21CN upgrade program (which is outdated already). Screw what Ofcom thinks. Fibre is the future. Not old tech copper.

Screw it, I think I will switch to cable soon.
